Bizarre Creature Painting

By Aidan Perreault

Artist Statement

For this work I have painted a bizarre creature onto a 12x16 canvas. The idea was to take a stop-motion project I had created previously and make a painting from the result of that project. It features the creature from that video, but I was free to give it more detail and color since it’s no longer in an animation format. The painting tries to evoke the childlike, playful perspective of the original creature. Like something from a child’s imagination, with no clear narrative. The creature itself mixes organic, natural objects with inorganic ones. It creates a contrast between organic and geometric shapes, reminding us of how these things coexist. Though this may simply be one of many ideas, I never settled on one during its creation. The painting gives us a more detailed look at this bizarre entity.

The format of the painting is a 12x16 canvas. The format is important to me as I like painting, and this was my first painting during this semester. This creature doesn’t have a direct inspiration. However, concepts such as large sprouting plants; inanimate objects with sprouting eyes; and a contrast between nature and technology is not uncommon in fiction. To reiterate, the painting is a direct follow-up to my previous stop-motion project, and I made the most out of the small canvas I’m working with. The themes of this work are open to interpretation, but onlookers will no doubt find the bizarre nature of the creature in front of them interesting.
